  • Signalling some progress in diplomatic negotiations to resolve the standoff between Indian and Chinese troops that began in May 2020 along the Line of Actual Control in eastern Ladakh, India said Thursday that the two sides had a “frank, constructive and forward-looking” exchange of views in Beijing on the situation along the LAC to “narrow down the differences” and “find early resolution of the outstanding issues”.
  • The two sides, according to the Ministry of External Affairs, also agreed on “intensified contact through diplomatic and military channels”.

  • AFTER HAVING committed nearly all of the $10 billion in subsidies under its ambitious semiconductor manufacturing incentive policy, the government has prepared a blueprint for the second phase of the scheme — it could increase the outlay of the programme to $15 billion, offer capital support for raw materials and gases used in chip manufacturing, and reduce subsidies for assembly and testing plants, The Indian Express has learnt.
  • “In a short period of time, we managed to clear four chip proposals including a fabrication plant.
  • The original incentive policy outlay of $10 billion will almost get over once subsidy payments are made to the entities setting up these facilities.

  • Artificial rain, behavioural changes, voluntary limits on private vehicles, tweaking office hours, and promoting work from home: These are some of the suggestions from experts that the Delhi government will be deliberating on as it formulates this year’s Winter Action Plan aimed at combating air pollution that the season has become notorious for in the Capital.
  • The recommendations were sought at a Round Table Conference on Thursday which was attended by several environmental experts and officials, and chaired by the Delhi Environment Minister, Gopal Rai.

  • Pakistan holds the rotating chairmanship of the SCO Council of Heads of Government (CHG) and in that capacity, will be hosting the two-day in-person SCO Heads of Governments Meeting in October.

 

India gets second nuclear submarine with commissioning of INS Arighaat

  • India’s second nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine, the INS Arighaat, was commissioned into service at Visakhapatnam in the presence of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday (August 29, 2024).
  • It joins the first such submarine, the INS Arihant, which was commissioned into service in 2016.
  • “The Arighaat will further strengthen India’s nuclear triad, enhance nuclear deterrence, establish strategic balance and peace and play a decisive role in the country’s security,” Mr. Singh said at the induction ceremony.

  • On a three-day visit to India, Chile’s Foreign Minister Alberto van Klaveren held a meeting with External Affairs minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday and discussed bilateral cooperation in trade and investment, agriculture, critical minerals, defence and space among other issues.
  • In an interview with Shubhajit Roy, van Klaveren talks about the possible investment opportunities for India in lithium and copper deposits in Chile, exports of mangoes and medicines from India, balancing between China and other powers, and India’s role in the Russia-Ukraine war.

  • Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, said on Thursday (August 29) that during his Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra earlier this year he had “a daily routine of practising jiu-jitsu every evening” which brought together young martial arts students from towns where they stayed.
  • “Our goal was to introduce these young minds to the beauty of the ‘Gentle Art’ — a harmonious blend of meditation, jiu-jitsu, Aikido, and non-violent conflict resolution techniques.
  • We aimed to instill in them the value of transforming violence into gentleness, giving them the tools to build a more compassionate and safer society,” he posted on X, adding that a “Bharat Dojo Yatra is coming soon”.

  • Hearing two pleas by AAP councillors Prem Chauhan and Tilotma Chaudhary seeking the postponement of the MCD wards committee elections, the Delhi High Court orally remarked on Friday they could have filed their nomination papers instead of filing petitions before the court.
  • As the court of Justice Purushaindra Kaurav expressed that it was “100 per cent not inclined” to entertain the pleas, Chauhan and Chaudhary withdrew their pleas.

 

DPIIT takes over IT arm of Patents Office

  • The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has taken over the IT department of the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs & Trade Marks (CGPDTM) amid allegations of mismanagement.
  • This follows a petition filed by the All India Patent Officers Welfare Association (AIPOWA) on May 24, 2024 in the High Court of Delhi, alleging “large-scale instances” of violation of Section 73(4) of the Patents Act, 1970, by the office of CGPDTM.
  • The Section 73(4) of the Patents Act, 1970 states that the controller, “without prejudice” may withdraw any matter pending before an officer and deal with such matter himself either from the beginning or from the stage it was withdrawn or transfer the same to another officer.
