  • India and Russia have agreed to expedite the delivery of spare parts of Russian-origin military platforms by setting up joint ventures in India among other ways, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said Tuesday, the Government’s first public acknowledgement of a delay in Russian supplies amid the war in Ukraine.
  • Kwatra said Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the issue with Russian President Vladimir as the two leaders discussed bilateral defence ties at the 22nd India-Russia annual summit in Moscow.

  • The Supreme Court on Tuesday directed the chief secretaries of states and Union Territories (UTs), which are yet to set up Specialised Adoption Agencies (SAAs) in every district, to do so by August 30, failing which contempt of court proceedings will be considered against them.
  • A three-judge bench presided by CJI D Y Chandrachud, which perused an affidavit filed by the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development, noted that only 370 out of 760 districts in the country have functional SAAs.

  • The employment growth in the country jumped by nearly 6 per cent in the fiscal 2023-24, as compared to an increase of 3.2 per cent recorded in FY2023, according to the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) data. In FY2024, the workforce in the country increased by around 4.67 crore to 64.33 crore, compared to 59.67 crore in FY2023, the data, which measures productivity at the industry level, showed.
  • The RBI’s data comes a few days after a research report by Citigroup India, which said that the country would struggle to create sufficient employment opportunities even with a 7 per cent growth rate – a claim refuted by the Ministry of Labour and Employment.

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Tuesday cautioned banks against having “lakhs of accounts” used for fraudulent transactions and evergreening of loan accounts.
  • “We found certain banks having lakhs of such accounts with apparently no valid reason. Some of these accounts were also used as a conduit for certain fraudulent transactions and ever-greening of loan accounts.
  • Internal accounts are high risk in nature on account of its potential for misuse,” RBI Deputy Governor Swaminathan J said at a Conference of statutory auditors and chief financial officers of commercial banks and financial institutions.
