  • The Delhi High Court on Thursday listed in August WhatsApp and Meta’s (formerly Facebook) 2021 petitions challenging a provision of the 2021 Information Technology Rules for social media intermediaries, requiring them to identify the first originator of information.
  • The messaging app and the parent company have challenged Rule 4(2) of the 2021 IT (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules which requires “significant social media intermediaries” providing primarily messaging services to “enable the identification of the first originator of the information”, which may be required by a court order or an order of the competent authority, as per the IT (Procedure and Safeguards for interception, monitoring and decryption of information) Rules, 2009.

  • With pro-Palestine protests rocking US universities, triggering mass arrests, India on Thursday waded into the issue by saying that “we are all judged by what we do at home and not what we say abroad”. New Delhi also termed the latest US State Department report on Human Rights as “deeply biased”.
  • Responding to questions on protest at Columbia University and Universities in the US, the Ministry of External Affairs’ official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “We have seen reports on the matter and have been following related events.
  • In every democracy, there has to be the right balance between freedom of expression, sense of responsibility and public safety and order.”

 

 

India discusses Mallya extradition with France where he has properties

  • The Indian government is learnt to have asked French authorities, in a meeting held earlier this month, to approve the extradition of liquor baron Vijay Mallya “without preconditions”.
  • According to sources, Mallya’s extradition was raised in the 16th meeting of the India-France Joint Working Group on Counter Terrorism, held on April 15.

  • Last night, hundreds of police officers in riot gear, including some on horseback, arrested at least 50 protesters at the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin), where students marched to the campus’s main lawn with plans to set up an encampment.
  • Almost 100 arrests were also made in University of Southern California (USC), and police action was threatened in Harvard and Brown universities where students set up encampments in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

  • Further easing of food prices is “on the anvil” as India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted above-normal rainfall during the monsoon season, the Ministry of Finance said in its latest monthly economic review for March released Thursday.
  • This comes even as high food inflation remains a challenge in several major economies across the world and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) sees food price uncertainties weighing on the inflation outlook, it noted.

  • The commerce Ministry has initiated an exercise to identify required infrastructure needs, potential sectors, and clusters which would help the country achieve the $1 trillion merchandise exports target by 2030 but sustainability will be a major concern going forward, senior government officials said on Thursday.
  • This comes a day after the European Parliament voted on Wednesday for a new law that will require larger companies operating in the bloc to check if their supply chains use forced labour or cause environmental damage and act to take action if they do.
  • EU lawmakers backed the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) by 374 votes to 235 against, with 19 abstentions, Reuters reported.
