  • SpaceX’s giant Starship rocket survived reentry through Earth’s atmosphere on Thursday and splashed down in the Indian Ocean as planned during its fourth test mission after launching from south Texas.
  • The two-stage spacecraft, consisting of the Starship cruise vessel mounted atop its towering Super Heavy rocket booster, broke apart during its last attempt in March to survive a blazingly hot reentry through Earth’s atmosphere.
  • But the craft survived its reentry on Thursday, a SpaceX livestream showed.

  • The Chinese Foreign Ministry, which congratulated Narendra Modi, the BJP and NDA on their election victory, has protested the exchange of messages between Taiwan President Lai Ching-te and Modi on the poll outcome.
  • On Wednesday, Lai, who was elected Taiwan’s President last month, in a post on X, said: “My sincere congratulations to Prime Minister @narendramodi on his election victory. We look forward to enhancing the fast-growing #Taiwan-#India partnership, expanding our collaboration on trade, technology & other sectors to contribute to peace & prosperity in the #IndoPacific.”

  • The Delhi High Court recently observed that the Central Information Commission (CIC) has no jurisdiction to comment on the utilisation of funds by the members of Parliament under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme.
  • A single-judge bench of Justice Subramonium Prasad said in its May 15 order, “The Ld. CIC has no jurisdiction to comment upon the utilization of funds by the Members of Parliament under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS).
  • The scope of the RTI Act is only to ensure that information sought for under the RTI Act is dissipated in order to secure access to information under the control of public authorities.”

  • Among the many readings of Verdict 2024 is this one: The outcome, in many parts of the country, may have been shaped by economic issues like berozgari (unemployment) and mehengai (inflation) rising to the surface, and becoming salient.
  • Of the two, the latter may have proved to be more decisive — Indian voters have historically blamed governments for inflation.
  • They might be reconciled to working for low remuneration, but not to price rise significantly eating into their purchasing power.
  • The average annual consumer price index (CPI) inflation in the 12 months from May 2018 leading to the 2019 election was just 3.3 per cent.
  • It was even lower, at 0.03 per cent, for retail food inflation.
  • Benign inflation provided an environment that was conducive to the Narendra Modi government’s return to power by a thumping majority, bigger than in 2014.

  • With the members of the newly elected 18th Lok Sabha declared on June 4, data compiled by PRS Legislative Research shows how the composition of the Lower House has changed from 2019.
  • The BJP emerged as the single largest party in the 18th Lok Sabha with 240 seats, followed by the biggest Opposition party in the Congress at 99 seats.
  • In total, MPs from across 41 parties have been elected. While the national parties won 346 seats, or 64% of the total 543 seats, state parties won 179 seats, or 33%. Unrecognised parties won 11 seats and independents won seven.

Veg thali prices rise by 9%

  • The on-year cost of a representative, home-cooked vegetarian thali rose by nine per cent and non-vegetarian thali declined by seven per cent in April 2024, CRISIL M&A Research said.
  • The cost of the veg thali increased owing to a surge of 39 per cent, 41 per cent and 43 per cent on-year in the prices of tomato, potato and onion, respectively, largely because of the low base of last fiscal, Crisil said.
