24 July 2024, Quick Facts of the Day

1.            A 14-year-old boy in Kerala recently died after contracting the Nipah virus, a zoonotic virus that spreads from animals to humans and can also be transmitted through contaminated food or direct person-to-person contact. Nipah virus, an RNA virus from the Paramyxoviridae family, is linked to Hendra virus and initially appeared in domestic animals such as pigs and bats. It primarily spreads through fruit bats and is present in bat urine, feces, saliva, and birthing fluids. The virus causes severe encephalitic syndrome with symptoms like fever, headache, drowsiness, and potentially coma or death, with a fatality rate between 40% and 75%. Diagnosis is via RT-PCR or ELISA, but there are currently no vaccines for humans or animals. The WHO has listed Nipah as a priority disease.

2.            The Haryana government has declared all villages "Lal Dora-free" as part of a scheme launched on December 25, 2019, Good Governance Day. This initiative aims to establish clear property ownership in rural areas by using drone technology for mapping land parcels and issuing legal ownership cards, or 'Record of Rights,' to village household owners. Previously, "Lal Dora" areas—inhabited land in villages often excluded from formal surveys—lacked formal documentation, leaving many rural communities without legal land rights. The reform ensures that rural property owners can now use their land as financial assets for bank loans, addressing a significant barrier in rural land management.

3.            The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) recently released the National Time Release Study (NTRS) 2024 report, which evaluates cargo release times at nine Indian ports. The study assesses progress towards the National Trade Facilitation Action Plan (NTFAP) targets and examines the impact of trade facilitation initiatives. The NTFAP seeks to enhance cross-border clearance through efficient, transparent, and technology-driven procedures. NTRS 2024, the fourth annual study, used a standardized methodology to analyze customs clearance times for imports and exports from January 1 to February 7, 2024. It highlights the effectiveness of the CBIC Pre-payment Customs Compliance Verification (PCCV) initiative, which accelerates final clearance to within 3 minutes after duty payment by completing all customs formalities beforehand.

4.            On July 23, 2024, the Prime Minister paid tribute to Chandra Shekhar Azad on his birth anniversary. Born on July 23, 1906, in Alirajpur, Madhya Pradesh, Azad was a prominent Indian revolutionary who joined the Non-Cooperation Movement at 15. After its suspension in 1922, he joined the Hindustan Republican Association (HRA), a revolutionary group aiming to overthrow British rule. The HRA, established in 1924, was reorganized into the Hindustan Socialist Republican Army (HSRA) in 1928. Azad was involved in several key revolutionary activities, including a conspiracy to blow up Lord Irwin's train in 1929. He was martyred at Azad Park in Allahabad on February 27, 1931.
